What Is The MYOLYN MyoCycle And How Does It Help Celeste Get Back On Her Feet?
Celeste’s physical therapy routine involves using the MYOLYN MyoCycle, a stationary functional electrical stimulation (FES) bike to help people with paralysis increase their range of motion, encourage blood flow and reduce spasms.
What is functional electrical stimulation? MYOLYN’s website states, “FES works by using small amounts of electricity to help muscles contract and produce functional movements.” (i.e. riding a bike) These pulses of electricity start in the MyoCycle, travel to Celeste’s muscles through leads, and eventually to the stim pads connected to Celeste’s legs.
There are many benefits of FES. Some of them are:
Reduces muscle spasms. FES makes muscles tired, reducing the chance of spasticity.
Prevents muscle atrophy. The MyoCycle and FES allow Celeste to use her leg muscles in a way she hasn’t been able to since her accident.
Improves cardiovascular health. Celeste often does one-hour workouts on the MyoCycle!
Reduces neuropathic pain by stimulating the entire circulatory system including blood, endocrine and lymphatic systems.
Promotes muscle re-growth by adding load while stimulating contractions.
On My Feet and Beyond recently posted a video series explaining step by step how Celeste prepares for, and uses the MyoCycle. Below is the complete video of a workout Celeste does four times a week.
