How THC and CBD Products Help With Spinal Cord Injuries

There aren’t cures for spinal cord injuries (yet), but there are many methods available to help spinal cord injury survivors manage pain, spasms and other challenges that come with a spinal cord injury.

One of these methods is THC and CBD products.

According to WebMD, THC, otherwise known as Tetrahydrocannabinol, “is the main psychoactive ingredient in the cannabis plant. It’s what makes you feel ‘high’ when you smoke marijuana or eat an edible.”

CBD, otherwise known as cannabidiol, is the second-most prevalent and active ingredient in cannabis (marijuana). According to Harvard Health Publishing, “while CBD is an essential component of medical marijuana, it is derived directly from the hemp plant, a cousin of marijuana, or manufactured in a laboratory. One of hundreds of components in marijuana, CBD does not cause a high by itself.”

Studies have shown that CBD has a variety of health benefits, including but not limited to:

  • Reducing anxiety

  • Combating insomnia

  • Lowering chronic pain and inflammation

  • Maintaining flexibility

With regards to spinal cord injuries, CBD has helped many with:

  • Managing muscle spasms

  • Pain relief

  • Boosting mood

  • And more

There are more than enough CBD and THC products to choose from, and it can be overwhelming to decide where to to start. Most of the products Celeste has tried combine both CBD and THC which does induce a high feeling. The level of high experienced can be moderated by how much THC is in any particular product and how much of the product is ingested.

Below are the brands Celeste has tried and what she thinks of them.

Medterra

  • Daily Delight: Celeste recommends taking a whole one of these, creating a gentle, happy buzz that is motivating. The flavors are pleasant and not too strong, but the sugar coating is heavy. Daily Delights are good for boosting mood and relieving pain.

  • Mood Boost: Super effective for mood stabilizing and managing pain. Mood Boost is a good one to take if you don’t want to feel buzzed. Sugar coating isn’t quite as heavy as other products and Celeste loves the earthy, understated saffron flavor.

  • Focus: Celeste has yet to try this one, but is eager to!

Lazarus Naturals

  • CBD Tincture: Celeste mixes this bottle into a big pot of tea, which makes a cacophony of glorious, herbal goodness.

  • Turmeric: This product has the best flavor and eating experience of all by far. It’s savory, not sweet, and the ginger turmeric flavor is delicious. There is no sugar coating, and they are larger in size which allows time to enjoy chewing. They are nice for elevating mood and pain relief. 25 MG is not enough for a good workout buzz, however they are good to take if you don’t want to feel buzzed.

Erth Wellness

  • Full Spectrum Relief Drops: Celeste recently added this to her nighttime vitamin routine. A flavorless oil, Celeste is expecting it to help with her overnight spasms that cause her to wake feeling extremely uncomfortable. She first tried 2-3 drops on her tongue. This caused her to fall asleep fast and hard after about 20 minutes of very active leg spasms moving in all directions. She experienced stiffening spasms throughout the night, with some leg movement as well as trunk spasms. Celeste then tried one drop on a vitamin the next night. This method allowed her to fall asleep more normally. She still had similar spasms as the previous night, but they weren’t as intense. For the next two nights, Celeste put two drops on her vitamin. She fell asleep normally and stayed asleep not being woken by spasms in the night. Spasms were medium intensity before falling asleep, waking in the night to pee and in the morning. Her back pain was greatly relieved.

    • Celeste also made an oil infusion with Cuban Oregano, aka Vick’s Vaporub plant, cayenne pepper, Full Spectrum Relief Drops and coconut oil. She is using it as topical relief for her Tennis Elbow.

Jack Herer - Live Resin: A stronger product. Celeste recommends 1/4 or 1/3 of each gummy. It has a good, bright citrus flavor that lasts three hours. On a scale of 1-10, Celeste gives the sweetness level an eight. Excellent for working out.

  • Pineapple Express: Another stronger product, Celeste also recommends 1/4 to 1/3 of each gummy. This product lasts about three hours with a good and mellow pineapple flavor. On a scale of 1-10, Celeste gives the sweetness level a six. Also great for working out!

  • Gorilla Glue #4: Same with the previous two, Celeste recommends a 1/4 to 1/3 of each gummy. With a unique, pleasing flavor of herbal daiquiri ice, this product lasts about three hours without the flavor being too overpowering. On a scale of 1-10, Celeste gives the sweetness level a four. Another great product for working out!
